Nakdong River World Peace Culture FestivalWe will never forget their noble sacrifice

6.25 전쟁에 참전했다가 전사한 연합군 참전용사 안드레 레짐발드(A.Regimbald) 이병의 아들인 레오 드메이(Leo Demay).
Leo Demay who is a son of Private Andre Regimbald who joined the Korean War as a member of the UN forces and was killed in action.

그는 아버지가 전사한지 8개월 뒤 세상에 태어났습니다.
He was born in 8 months after his father was killed in action.

다른 가정에 입양돼 공무원으로 성장한 레오 드메이씨는 입양기관에 친부모의 정보를 요청했다가 아버지의 존재를 알게 돼 2007년 4월 마침내 아버지가 묻힌 부산 UN기념공원을 찾게 됩니다.
Adopted by another family and grew up as a civil servant, Leo Demay asked the adoption agency for information on his biological parents and heard about his late father. At last, In April 2007, he came to visit the Busan UN Memorial Park where his father was buried.

묘지에 놓인 장미 두 송이!
하나는 건강 때문에 함께 한국으로 오지 못한 친어머니의 것이고, 다른 하나는 자신이 올린 장미꽃~
Two clusters of rose lain on the grave!
One for his biological mother who could not accompany him for her health problem and the other one for himself ~

레오 드메이씨는 10년 동안 아버지 곁에서 묘지를 지키다가 지난 5월 31일 아버지 곁을 떠나 고국으로 돌아갔습니다.
Mr. Leo Demay had kept his father’s grave for 10 years until he went back to his motherland on May 31.

한국전쟁은 냉전시대의 두 이념이 충돌해서 만들어진 ‘이념의 비극’이었습니다.
The Korean War was a ‘Tragedy of Ideology’ that was created by the collision of two ideologies in the Cold War era

1950년 6월 25일 새벽 4시~
6.25 전쟁은 38선을 넘은 북한의 기습남침으로 시작됐습니다.
4 am, June 25, 1950~
The Korean War broke out war with a surprise attack of North Korea across the 38th parallel..

한 달 안에 전쟁을 끝내겠다는 김일성의 의도대로 개전 3일 만에 적의 수중에 들어가 버린 수도 서울~
Seoul, the capital of South Korea, which fell into the hands of the enemy as Kim Il Sung had talked large to end the war~

북한군은 남진을 계속해 7월말 낙동강까지 밀어붙여 대구와 부산을 잇는 아군의 대동맥을 끊으려고 압박을 가해왔습니다.
The North Korean forces continued to march south and push the front down to the Nakdong River, giving pressure to cut the main artery of South Korea connecting Daegu to Busan.

UN은 북한의 남침을 불법침략으로 규정짓고 이를 격퇴하기 위해 병력과 의료, 물자를 파견했습니다.
The United Nations has sent troops, medical services and supplies to repatriate North Korea after defining the North Korean invasion of the South as illegal.

전혀 알지도 못하고 만나본 적도 없는 나라의 국민을 보호하고 자유민주주의를 수호하기 위해 전쟁에 뛰어든 연합군 병사들!
The Allied soldiers who entered into a war to protect a people that they never knew and that they never met and to defend the liberal democracy!

뜨거웠던 1950년 여름~
아군은 한반도 최남단 부산에서 불과 100km 떨어진 낙동강 전선까지 밀려났습니다.
The hot summer of 1950~
Our forces were pushed back to the Nakdong River Front, which is only 100 km away from Busan, the southernmost tip of the Korean Peninsula.

이제 대한민국을 지켜줄 마지막 울타리는 낙동강뿐!
Now, the last fence to defend the Republic of Korea is the Nakdong River!

미 8군 사령관 워커장군은 낙동강전선을 최후의 방어선으로 구축해 ‘워커-라인(Walker Line)’ 사수에 들어갔습니다.
General Walker, the US 8th Army commander, built the Nakdong River front line as the last defense line and began to keep the ‘Walker Line’.

한국전쟁에서 낯설게 만나 전우가 되어 함께 싸웠던 한, 미 연합군!
The ROK-U.S. Combined Forces who met in a strange way but fought together as a team!

전선 곳곳에서 미군을 비롯한 연합군이 자유민주주의를 지키기 위해 적의 ‘8월 대공세’에 맞서 싸웠습니다.
On all fronts, the US Army and other allied forces fought against the ‘Enemy's August Major Offensive’ to defend the liberal democracy.

왜관 서북방에 집결중인 북한군을 섬멸하기 위해 융단폭격을 가하면서 적의 보급로가 차단되자 북한군의 사기는 땅에 떨어졌습니다.
When the enemy's supply route was blocked by Allied Forces’ carpet bombing in the northwestern part of Waeguan where the North Korean forces were assembled, their morale fell to the ground.

55일간의 치열했던 낙동강 전투에서 전사 또는 실종되거나 부상한 미군을 비롯한 연합군은 무려 16만 여명!
In the 55 day long fierce battle along the Nakdong River, as many as 160,000 were killed, missing, or wounded from the Allied Forces including the US Army!

그들은 낯선 이국 땅에서 이렇게 자유민주주의를 지키기 위해 안타깝게 쓰러져갔습니다.
Like this, they have fallen sadly in a strange foreign land to defend the liberal democracy.

이들의 희생을 바탕으로 마지노선을 사수한 결과 9월 15일 맥아더 장군의 인천상륙작전과 함께 아군의 총 반격이 시작됐습니다.
As a result of keeping the Maginot Line based on their sacrifice, our all-out counterattack began with the Incheon Landing Operation (Operation Chromite) led by General MacArthur on September 15.

불굴의 투혼으로 낙동강을 지켜낸 수많은 미군의 전쟁영웅들!
A number of the US Army war heroes who had kept the Nakdong River with their invincible fighting spirit!

우리는 결코 그들의 숭고한 희생을 잊지 않고 기억하겠습니다.
We will never forget their noble sacrifice.

낙동강전투의 중심이었던 경상북도 칠곡군은 그 때 전투에서 우리가 어떻게 전쟁을 치렀고 공산주의자를 물리쳤는지 재조명하는 작업을 활발히 진행하고 있습니다.
As the center of the Great Nakdong Offensive, Chilgok County, Gyeongsangbuk-do is actively working on the review of how we fought at the battle and how we defeated the communist.

2년 전 낙동강 방어선전투를 재조명하기 위해 문을 연 호국평화기념관!
The Chilgok Patriots & Peace Memorial Hall to review the Great Nakdong Offensive which was opened 2 years ago

군데군데 구멍이 뚫린 대형 철모와 탄피 조형물~
낙동강 방어선에서 매일 6~7백명의 병사들이 쓰러져간 흔적들입니다.
Large helmets with holes over and there and shell sculptures~
These are the trace of 6 to 700 soldiers falling on the Nakdong River line every day.

그들은 비록 전장의 이슬로 사라졌지만 우리들은 병사수첩과 군번줄, 소중한 사진들을 보관해 고귀한 희생을 기리고 있습니다.
Though they were killed in the battlefield, we are honoring their noble sacrifice, keeping their ID cards, serial number chains, and precious photos.

전쟁의 마지막 보루였던 낙동강 칠곡지구의 호국의지를 되새기기 위해 칠곡군이 매년 개최하고 있는 낙동강세계평화문화대축전!
The Nakdong River World Peace Culture Festival which has been held annually by Chilgok County to recall the will of national defense infiltrated in the Nakdong River Chilgok District, the last bastion of the war!

6. 25 참전에 대한 고마움을 표현할 수 있는 기념행사와 여러분이 직접 참여할 수 있는 왜관철교 행진, 낙동강 가상전투 같은 다양한 프로그램을 준비했습니다.
We have prepared various programs such as the memorial ceremony to express gratitude for the participation in the Korean War, Waeguan Railroad Bridge Parade where you can participate in person, and Virtual Nakdong River Battle.

오는 9월 22일부터 24일까지 칠곡 생태공원에서 열리는 올해 행사에 미군 여러분들을 초대합니다.
We are inviting all of you from the US Army to this year's event at the Chilgok Ecological Park from September 22 to 24.

낙동강 전선에서 세계 공산주의를 온 몸으로 막아내며 자유민주주의를 지켜낸 자유진영의 용사들!
Free World's soldiers who blocked the world communism making their last ditch effort to defend the liberal democracy at the Nakdong River Front!

67년 전 여러분의 희생과 지원이 없었다면 아마도 한반도는 공산주의자들의 붉은 영토로 전락했을 것입니다.
Without your sacrifice and support 67 years back, the Korean Peninsula must have become the red territory of the communists.

한국과 미국의 혈맹(Blood Alliance) 관계가 이번 낙동강세계평화문화대축전을 통해 더욱 공고 해질 것으로 기대합니다.
We hope that the Korea-US blood alliance will be much more consolidated at this opportunity of the Nakdong River World Peace Culture Festival.
